The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or Duomo, is at the heart of religious life. Its dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, is the largest structure of its type ever built of masonry. Visible to several kilometers away, it has become the symbol of the skyline of Florence. The cathedral was built on the foundations of the existing Church of Santa Reparata since 1296 and was consecrated in 1436 after the construction of the dome. In the same square where the cathedral is located arise then the Baptistery of San Giovanni and Giotto’s Campanile. Also examples of extraordinary architectural mastery of time.
